Somebody's probably already mentioned this, but Richard E. Grant's performance of another Hamlet soliloquy at the end of Withnail & I. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WnNL67PEKU

Thank you for introducing me to this Hamlet interpretation; it is always wonderful to see another version of the famous soliloquy. Question: have you seen Adam Driver's rendition from Megalopolis? I'm really curious as to what a full performance of Hamlet from him would be like based on his interpretation.

Second question: have you heard of the show Slings and Arrows? Given your interest in Shakespeare and theater, you may enjoy it.

Thanks so much, Ros, I'll have to give Slings and Arrows a watch, I've never actually seen it. I haven't seen Megalopolis either but I did watch one of my friends doing an extremely funny and angry impression of the speech part-way through a rant about how much she hated the film

Your article made my day! My forthcoming book (April 23, 2025): Seducing Will Shakespeare, is a novelization of the Bard's sonnets; a fictional memoir of his life the year prior to him becoming the renowned playwright.

If you'd like to read the prologue, I can send you the link.

Great article! I always loved Kurosawa's Throne of Blood for a similar reason - transposing Macbeth to feudal Japan made the whole story fresh again. I've not seen Theater of Blood - will put that right soon!

Thank you so much! Kurosawa’s films are fascinating - a very different tone from Theatre of Blood but they’re both great adaptations

I love this movie. This and the first Dr Phibes movies. I’m also a big fan of Hammer Horror from the 1950s.
