I'll have to read it, thanks Jason! There was only so much I could get in Moderation as it was an hour long and focussed on two characters so it'd be great to read a longer, richer narrative. It's such an interesting topic
I love ALL of this, and am excited to get to read your writing! I prefer to read about horror than to actually read it (I’m scaredy-cat). So this is perfect for me.
And the fact that your grandfather had a blog! I love that too.
I’m so happy that you followed me so that I could find your work! Substack is so full of incredible people doing wondrous things, and I’m so glad you’re here!
Thank you so much for your support, Wake, it means a lot and I hope you enjoy the newsletter! There are definitely still some horror films I’m scared to watch but want to read about…
I’m also excited about the theatre aspects of your newsletter. My first degree was in film/theatre/english lit and I miss being in class, even now, 20 years later. Being surrounded by people who loved talking and dissecting the glorious minutiae of it all; it was a dream.
Hello and congrats for your achievement! Re to the topic of your PhD i can't avoid to suggest a reading: the title is "Authentic Thaumaturgy" by PEI Bonewits... one word can be used: odd! (And i am ref to the author, not to the book) If you're interested only in a glance i made a kind of report of this book in a post! All the best
Thanks, just a couple of tips: the post is not on my primary substack (that is dedicated to the rpg i wrote), it is on a secondary substack i use to spread the rpg knowledge in Italy (i am an italian collector and with that i try to educate on the first and obscure titles the italian rpg community). Therefore it is written in italian (which is not a great issue with google translator now). The most relevant part of the post are the pictures which report a selection of the pages of the original book. Perhaps there was some supernatural whisper that told you! He's great if you like ghost stories, the 1968 BBC adaptation of Whistle and I'll Come to You is incredible.
Welcome Rebekah - and hope the ghost of MR James is a benign one overseeing your work. A friend has just written what is sure to be the definitive biography of MRJ, coming out in 2025 from OUP. Good luck with your Substack and other writing!
My academic path has been atypical because I’ve also worked in theatre so have gone in and out of university and only really returned to do a PhD because Covid struck and all the theatres closed! It took me 3 years to actually write the PhD which I handed in in summer 2023 and then I had to wait ages for my viva examination, then do my minor corrections, then hand the final version in to be approved, so I ended up graduating a year later in summer 2024… I also have two masters degrees which is silly, no one should do two masters degrees. I’m 31 now!
If you haven't read it previously, We Had to Remove This Post by Hanna Bervoets might be a spiritual cousin to Moderation (which sounds amazing).

Ooh you got your PhD on my birthday 🥳 congratulations
Welcome aboard. Also congratulations! 💐 I look forward to reading all of your writings.
Thanks so much, Mark!

Ooh thank you this looks fascinating, I’ll check out the post!

Thanks for taking the time to read it! Best
Got it, thanks, I’ll do my best
Congrats on the PhD. I didn't have a clue about the portrait so I'm subscribing - I clearly need to learn more about this!
Amazing! I've got some quizzes lined up which will be easier for people who regularly read the substack...
Did get it and not the faintest idea how as I've never read and barely even heard of MR James. Should I?
Perhaps there was some supernatural whisper that told you! He's great if you like ghost stories, the 1968 BBC adaptation of Whistle and I'll Come to You is incredible.
I got the trivia question right, but only because I'd seen the same portrait on substacka few days ago. Does that count?
And hearty congratulations 👏🎉 on completing your PhD
It counts! Thank you so much, Nick
I did get it right!!! Congratulations on the PhD, Rebekah!
Thank you so much, Hanna!
Congrats Rebekah! And welcome to Substack!!
Thank you Anne! I always enjoy your writing

Thank you Ann! I can’t wait to read it
