Farewell to Arms is such a hilariously brilliant title

OMG, I love the parallel with Evil Dead 2 (I love that series) and Ash cutting his hand off. His manic laughter is just a knife-edge away from screaming. I love visual puns like the book title!

You've outdone yourself with this series, thank you! I love reading your articles.

Saw the title and knew there was going to be an evil dead 2 reference in here haha! The Shakespeare link is perfect - makes me want to read the play and rewatch evil dead 2. Great article!

Read this play when I was about 13 and stayed up all night sweating. So much gore even just to read is disturbing. I found the end vaguely endearing though

Thank you for this latest excellent and to me revelatory evisceration. Titus Andronicus, like Japanese tortures on POWs in WW2 (fast-growing bamboo up the urethra etc) was something we boarding-school pre-teens discussed in whispers 'after lights-out'. No actual knowledge was required, just an 11- or 12-year-old's imagination. So now I know. If only I had had your authoritative input c. 1960.
