I’m cheating this month and am reading a story I read earlier this year and LOVED. It’s short, sharp, and quintessentially Melvillian. I desperately wanted to try reading it out loud.
I know, I know, I’ve spent two months in a row away from The Bat Book. Don’t worry, I’m returning to it and my usual format next month. There are still plenty of great authors left to discover there, but over time I will thread more and more other collections into the series so we get as much variety as possible.
I will also try to read somewhere other than my kitchen because listening back I can hear that annoying buzzing light…you can imagine you’re sitting with me on a gloomy London afternoon!
Hark! — some one at the door. Who is this that chooses a time of thunder for making calls? And why don’t he, man-fashion, use the knocker, instead of making that doleful undertaker’s clatter with his fist against the hollow panel? But let him in…
