Oh the nostagia! I've got a video saved on my Instagram stories of a rather ramshackle Gorey Dracula show me and my then 9 year old son made. We used the line "I do no say blah blah blah blah blah" (from Hotel Transylvania) at least three times 😄
I wish we could put photos in comments - I have one of a programme that was in our archives when I worked at Norwich Theatre Royal (it hopefully still is in their archives, the past tense referred to my employment, I'm not implying I stole it... I digress), anyway, the programme is from a performance commencing Monday July 23rd, 1951, for one week, in which Mr Bela Lugosi was performing in an "entirely new" production of Dracula.
I didn't see it, alas, due to not being born for another 25 years or so, but I was staggered when I saw the artefact.
This was so interesting! I recently went to visit the Edward Gorey House in Cape Cod and that was the first time I heard of this play, the set design was gorgeous!
Gahhhh I saw the title and wanted this to be a movie I could sit down and watch, dammit! Really enjoying this series Rebekah, thank you for your research as always!
Wow, how amazing would it have been to see that Dracula onstage with Raul Julia (agreed, best Gomez!!)? The cross-hatching details would be the hardest thing to see blown up, as their scale works better when smaller.

Just watching Bargain Hunt and they had a little piece on toy theatres and one of the examples they showed was one based on Gorey's stage Dracula.

This is really wonderful. There is an excellent small theatre company here in Chicago which is doing a series called “The Uncanny Attic”, based on Gorey’s alphabet. Loved the 'pop-up theatre' Dracula. A teensette static, perhaps, but a must-watch.
I might just have to write a new vampire story for it and try to stage it using my copy…
